I'm building my Trans Am to be a driver car. Something I can drive every day. Rockers are prone to rust, rock chips, and getting beat up. Why don't I just paint the rockers with Bed liner or something really hard? Protect the metal and hide my poor looking but functional repairs. The panels are practically out of sight and the car will be black anyways. Opinions?

Spray on bedliner is a bitch to remove I hear.
You could just throw some adhesive vinyl Ricer-Wrap down there?
But since the rockers are out of sight mainly, it would probably be fine to do.

Hmm, I think it's a good idea. It'll certainly last longer!

Unless you are driving a lifted truck that sees a lot of trail time, don't spray bed liner on anything. If you don't want your F body to look like a trailer trash mobile I highly suggest not putting bed liner on it anywhere.

Maybe not bedliner, but that is a good idea.

I've done something like this in the past.
I used "chip resistant" clear on my 79 Z28. I shot it before the color coat though. My car was White and the chip stuff yellows with age.
It has a slight texture, not enough to look weird but much smoother than bed liner.
You can get it in aerosol cans and on rockers it's not a bad idea.

Rocker guard paint, it's what you're looking for.

I put it on my floors under the carpet. The layers went like this: metal, rust preventative primer, bed liner, fake dynamat, carpet. It works quite well as an insulator and rust preventer.

I'll look into that. Thanks!

That stuff exists? I'll look into it.

Yep. It leaves a bit of a rough texture but is much tougher than regular paint. Since it's usually available in black and your car is going to be black it'll be hard to see anyway.
Bed liner will be brittle unless you put it on thicker than ideal (it'll look funny).

Shoot, didn't think of rocker guard paint! My Miata has that along its rockers as well but it's a bumpy transparent finish.
You can see it just below my number, it does a pretty good job of protecting the body but it's slightly harder to clean since dirt likes to stay in the textured surface.

I believe Porsche used to use this stuff.

Why not just repaint, and then use a 3M clear bra or something to protect it. The vinyl is cheap, pretty hard to notice, and will protect the paint without ruining it forever like bedliner.

Quite possible. I'm fairly sure I've seen it on older BMWs as well.

The product all the offroad guys use is called durabak. They sell it in smooth and rough finishes and a bunch of colors. I think its a great idea, anything to prevent rust!
